Hi All,
I took a drive down to Sheffield last night, to see Robyn's
appearance at
the Millenium Hall/Polish Ex-Serviceman's club - a smallish room with
about
50 people in the audience sat around tables. It was great to see
Robyn
outside London for a change. I usually have to travel down to the
QEH/12
Bar/Jazz Cafe/Notting Hill Arts Centre.
Support came from James William Hindle (http://jwh.hinah.com/), who
did a
nice line in soft melodic vocals ala Nick Drake/Elbow. I bumped into
him
outsied the venue, and checked with him that the gig was still on,
and he
said that it was, saying, "but you do know it's quite expensive to
get in
don't you?"
Robyn was in a very relaxed, talkative mood and seemed to be really
enjoying
playing. He came on bearing a vinyl copy of Rose Royce's greatest
hits he'd
picked up from a record shop across the road, and trailed a very home-
made
looking pick-up/mic (?) lead behind him.
There was lots of between song banter on the effect of tuning on
rodents and
wallpaper, amongst other things. There was a humorous slant to the
set
list, with plenty of laughs, quite akin to a John Hegley gig, but the
appearance of the piano version of, 'Flavour of the Night' was the
highlight
for me. It was the first time I'd seen him play piano. He ran to the
back
of the room to make the switch when he broke a string tuning. What
effect
this had on the rodents I don't know.
He was happy to play lots of requests shouted out from the audience.
I asked him whether there were still plans to release the Soft Boys'
Fillmore 2001 live album. He said that it had been mixed, but some
people
were not happy with the it, and they had a nice ambient mix of the
gig, but
maybe they'd do another mix, and it might appear in a years time.
The set list below is approximate, and almost certainly not in the
right
order. I may easily have missed the odd song out: -
