For around half an hour after the boat departed we ate and had a few
drinks inside the cabin, before moving outside onto the deck. The
performance started against a backdrop of Tokyo Bay at night.
Although not full, the moon was out and this prompted Robyn to begin
the show with a solo rendition of "Full Moon in My Soul".
Robyn was then joined by Scott and Peter, and after a few more songs
by Glenn. Bill watched the performance for quite some time from the
side, but he was later introduced by Robyn and started playing
tambourine.
They sang plenty of Beatles songs. When the boat got close to Haneda
airport and we could hear the din of planes taking off and landing,
they played "Back in the USSR" to great effect.
Robyn also played songs of his own including "Ole Tarantula"
and "Authority Box", with Glenn and Chris singing the chorus on "A
Globe of Frogs" (1988), and Peter played guitar for "Flesh Number
One (Beatle Dennis)" after practicing the song before the party.
Among the cover songs, possibly the most pleasant surprise of the
evening was when Robyn sang the REM song "Electrolite".
The only Squeeze number sung by Glenn was "Up the Junction". Glenn's
songs have complex chord progressions, which probably makes them
unsuitable for playing as a band on such occasions. When requested
to play a Nick Lowe song, Scott sang "Marie Provost".
Howlin' Robyn closed the extremely enjoyable performance lasting
roughly one hour and 20 minutes by singing "Wang Dang Doodle"
(written by Willie Dixon), and we spent the short time left on the
boat eating dessert in the cabin.
